What SystmConnect is, who uses it, and the different ways you can reach your practice or service through it.
SystmConnect is the online consultation system many GP practices and NHS services now use as their main front door. Instead of a single phone line, you can reach your practice through the app, a website form, a phone call or in person — and every request lands in the same place so the right team can pick it up.
This guide covers the basics: how to find it, how to sign in, and what happens after you submit something.
- 1
Check whether your practice uses SystmConnect
Look for a "Contact us online", "Online consultations" or "SystmConnect" link on your practice or service's website, or a message about it in the NHS App. Not every practice uses it, and some non-GP services (like community or mental health teams) use it too.
- 2
Choose how to sign in
You don't need to create a new password. You can usually sign in with your existing SystmOnline or Airmid login, or through the NHS App / NHS Login, depending on what your practice has set up.
- 3
Pick the right form for your request
Practices typically split requests into categories — for example a medical query, an admin request, or a fit note request — each with its own short form. Picking the closest match helps your request reach the right team faster.
- 4
Submit and keep your reference
After you submit, you should see a confirmation on screen and usually a copy by email or in the app. Keep this in case you need to follow up.
Tips & things to watch for
- Can't find the link on your practice's website? Ask reception — some practices only publicise it at check-in or by text message.
- Requests submitted outside opening hours are held and picked up when the service reopens; they don't disappear.
- SystmConnect is for non-emergency contact. For a life-threatening emergency, always call 999. For urgent same-day advice when your practice is closed, use NHS 111.
Frequently asked questions
Is SystmConnect free to use as a patient?
Yes. There's no charge to patients for submitting a request through SystmConnect — it's provided to GP practices at no cost until a centrally funded NHS framework is in place, and non-GP services fund their own access.
What if my practice doesn't use SystmConnect?
Then you'll need to contact them the way they normally ask — phone, a different online form, or in person. Not every practice or service has adopted SystmConnect yet.
